Interplay of fluvial incision and rockfalls in shaping periglacial mountain gorges

چکیده
Fluvial incision is the consequence of landscape readjustment to combined tectonic and climatic processes. In southwestern Alps (Haute Provence Geopark), deep gorges incised by Bès River attest efficient erosional processes at front Alpine mountain range. This catchment stands in a peripheral position, out glaciated domain during last glacial periods, which makes it suitable quantify fluvial related glacier-free environment. this paper, we combine high resolution 3D topographic mapping situ produced cosmogenic 36Cl dating gorge (the “Clue de Barles” Gorge). First, very high-resolution modeling from aerial drone surveys permits map erosion markers on walls accurately determine shielding factor for Cosmic Ray Exposure (CRE) dating. Secondly, CRE age distribution highlights two distinct geomorphic domains along vertical profile: i) higher section characterized clusters similar ages, interpreted as paraglacial rockfall events; ii) lower shows increasing ages with height, are ascribed occurring rate 0.15 mm/yr since 25 ka, 2 ka. Our results Clue Barles, compared other sites South French highlight that: morphology result combination both lateral gravitational processes, mean Quaternary least twice than further east formerly Alps.

Relative rates of fluvial bedrock incision on Titan and Earth
[1] Observations of likely fluvial channels on the surface of Titan, along with Titan’s geologically youthful surface, motivate this study of comparative fluvial erosion rates on Titan and the Earth. The roles of bedload abrasion, suspended load abrasion, plucking, and cavitation are considered. Despite orders of magnitude differences in some of the physical parameters that control fluvial inci...
متن کاملRapid late Pleistocene incision of Atlantic passive-margin river gorges.
The direct and secondary effects of rapidly changing climate caused large rivers draining the Atlantic passive margin to incise quickly into bedrock beginning about 35,000 years ago. Measured in samples from bedrock fluvial terraces, 10-beryllium shows that both the Susquehanna and Potomac Rivers incised 10- to 20-meter-deep gorges along steep, convex lower reaches during the last glacial cycle...
متن کاملAccelerating a fluvial incision and landscape evolution model with parallelism
Solving inverse problems and achieving statistical rigour in landscape evolution models requires running many model realizations. Parallel computation is necessary to achieve this in a reasonable time. However, no previous algorithm is well-suited to leveraging modern parallelism. Here, I describe an algorithm that can utilize the parallel potential of GPUs, many-core processors, and SIMD instr...
متن کاملControls on the degree of fluvial incision of continental shelves
During sea-level low stands continental shelves were dissected by a network of channels somewhat resembling today’s coastal plain streams. The network was subsequently buried or erased by marine processes during sea-level transgression, so that only some tracts are still conserved in the geological record. Herein we use a numerical model to study the effect of base level change by sea-level fal...
